Pack 317 Hiking Club

Objective:

An elective activity to encourage outdoor exploration, physical fitness, and environmental appreciation among Cub Scouts by organizing monthly hikes and rewarding their achievements with special recognition and awards.

1. Monthly Hike Schedule

Pack 317 will host a different hike at a local trail or park each month. This provides opportunities to learn about nature, practice Leave No Trace principles, and foster teamwork.

  • Hike Length: Varying from 1 to 3 miles, depending on the group.
  • Locations: Gahanna and Central Ohio

2. Award System

Scouts will earn rewards for completing specific mileage milestones.

Milestones & Awards:

  • 5 Miles: Hiking Stick
    Scouts will receive a personalized hiking stick, symbolizing the beginning of their hiking journey.
  • 10 Miles: Cub Scout Badge/Emblem for Hiking Stick
    Scouts will receive a Cub Scout badge/emblem to attach to their hiking stick, representing their commitment and progress.
  • 20 Miles: Rank Badge/Emblem for Hiking Stick
    Scouts will receive a current Rank badge or emblem to attach to their hiking stick, representing their commitment and progress.
  • 30 Miles: Blue & Gold Turks head knot woggles
    A special Cub Scout head knot woggle, celebrating their dedication to hiking and outdoor adventures.
  • 50 Miles: Leather Wrap for Hiking Stick
    Scouts will receive a custom leather wrap to add to their hiking stick, symbolizing their dedication and long-term commitment to hiking.
  • After 50 Miles – TBD

3. Six Essentials for Every Hike

Before every hike, scouts will review and pack the 6 Essentials:

  • Water: Bring enough for the hike duration.
  • First-aid kit: Basic supplies in case of injury.
  • Flashlight: For emergencies.
  • Trail food: Healthy snacks for energy.
  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
  • Whistle: For emergency signaling.

This will teach the scouts to be prepared and self-sufficient on every outing.

4. Educational Components

Incorporate short lessons during hikes on:

  • Leave No Trace principles
  • Basic survival skills
  • Plant and animal identification
  • Map reading and compass skills

6. Parental Involvement

Parents are required to join hikes and help scouts learn and track their miles. This creates a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

7. Pack Meeting Celebration

During Monthly Pack meetings Cub Scouts will be recognized for their achievements, with special awards and presentations.

This hiking club will not only help the scouts get active and appreciate nature but also give them a sense of accomplishment as they achieve their goals!
